Real Life Example

Name: Amanda
Age: 24 years

"When I first got asthma I was 19. I was very worried and scared but more than that I felt really isolated. I couldn't believe anyone else felt like me. None of my mates had asthma and although they were understanding it didn't help in how alone I felt. I found out about a local support group for people with asthma. You could join a group with other people in a similar situation. It was really hard to start with, talking to people I had never met before, but when we began talking all the things they felt about their asthma were the same as me. It was brilliant. It really helped me come to terms with my problem. I've made some new friends as well!"

Comments
Amanda joined a local support group of people in a similar situation. This helped her overcome her feeling of isolation and also helped her come to terms with her asthma. Asthma is a very common condition, yet a large number of people feel very isolated and alone, particularly when they are first diagnosed. Sharing these feelings with others can help greatly, whether with friends, family, doctor, asthma nurse, or other people who have asthma.
